Lion Dancers Portland, Oregon on High Poles - Jongs

      • White Lotus Dragon & Lion Dance Organization is the only not for profit lion dance team in the Portland, Oregon area. We came together as a group of inspirational young individuals that wanted a way to not only benefit local charities, but also to spread cultural awareness, while bonding as a group and having fun in the process.
      • We do many performances in the Portland area every year for Lunar New Year, conventions, grand opening celebrations, weddings, birthdays, and general charity events.

My interest in lion dance began at a young age but it wasn’t until I joined Gia Dinh Phat Tu Minh Quang when I was 12, I had the opportunity to join a team. My role from the beginning was mainly the tail, due to my size and strength. I continued my growth as tail, as I grew bigger and stronger, the team as well also grew. We made a transition from traditional Fut San to Hok san style of dance, essentially learning on our own through YouTube videos, and asking peers on social media. There was a point where I honestly thought the team was done because of members going to college, growing up, and conflicts of schedule. I personally made mistakes by missing and arriving late to performances and I regret it letting my brothers down. Thankfully we gather together, got over our humps and continue to do what we love, TOGETHER. We have grown so much over the past 12 years, this lion dance team has made such a significant impact in my life, and I can’t thank all the original members enough for the memories, bond, blood, sweat and tears we’ve endured together. I have some of my closest friends on this team, shout out to the Trio (Thien, Kevin and myself); lion dance is where we connected and became close, but it is not only them but also the other guys on the team--who are just as much my brothers as they are. Now that I am older, and the team has taken on a new journey with many new young members, the role I have been so comfortable with is slowly changing: I am currently the equipment manager of the team--a role that I personally took on along with teaching young members through encouragement, techniques, and practice. Though I still perform as a tail, I have taken a step back in order to give the young member opportunities to experience performing in front of hundreds of people and pass on my knowledge I have gathered throughout the years. I have enjoyed watching and seeing young members’ excitement as they perform, land tricks, and bond together. Looking back, lion dancing has given me a sense of fulfillment because I was never good enough to make a school sports team but I was able to excel in lion dancing. My love and passion for lion dance cannot be describe. To see how far we have made it from the beginning is truly inspiring and incredible. I’m grateful for this team, this brotherhood, this family we have created.
